Luckenbach Texas is a song to many folks.  It’s an infectious country music tune.  The actual title is “Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love),” and it was Waylon Jennings who released the song in April 1977.  It was the first single off the album Ol’ Waylon.  Another country music superstar, Willie Nelson, was a guest vocalist on the #1 country music song.  The song seems just as popular today as it was back in 1977.

Luckenbach Texas is a real place near Fredericksburg, Texas – an unincorporated ghost town community that is now little more than a great place for country music on the weekends.  You can see the outside of the buildings and go in the general store and post office, but the music is on Friday and Saturday nights.

The town originated in 1848.  The oldest building in Luckenbach is a combination saloon and general store opened back in the 1800s by Minna Engel.  The community was originally named Grape Creek.  The theory is that it was a misspelling.  “Gap Creek” is the literal meaning of the word “Luckenbach” in German).  The community was later renamed after Minna’s husband, Carl Albert Luckenbach.  Minna and Carl moved to a  town that became Albert, Texas, another famous Texas Hill Country music town.

There are a lot of great stories about the history of Luckenbach, and some of the stories are actually true.

Luckenbach grew to a high of 492 people in 1904, but it became almost a ghost town 50 years later.  The town was offered for sale in 1970 when the population was 3.  Actor Guich Koock and rancher Hondo Crouch bought the town for $30,000 in 1970.

There are just a few old buildings left.  There’s a dance hall and a general store.

Luckenbach is just 45 miles from Wimberley Square.  DIRECTIONS.  It is certainly a great choice for a Friday or Saturday night visit when the country music is rockin.
