Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring.  This ecological resource is the most significant and largest continually flowing karstic spring in the Texas Hill Country.  It is fed by the Trinity Aquifer.

Wildlife depends on the spring, which forms the headwaters of Cypress Creek, a few miles north of Wimberley, Texas. Limestone cliffs and native vegetation surround the spring with enchanting beauty for visitors of all ages.

Until recent developments, the Aquifer pushed water up to the mouth of the cave, sometimes gushing up to six feet into the air.  Jacob’s Well is also the entrance to the second-largest fully submerged cave in the State of Texas.

Freedivers often dive to the very bottom of the well, which is around 100 feet (30 m) deep. Scuba divers can find at least four cave entrances deep into the well, but the dangers here are very real. Some openings are so narrow that divers have to remove their tanks to get through. The caves are also very silty, adding another level of danger. At least eight people have lost their lives exploring the caves here.

If you want to see this forbidden beauty, exercise extreme caution. Although many people safely swim here at the top of the well, upward currents and rocks can provide danger even to shallow swimmers. However, it is an amazing thing to see and experience.

Preserve includes 81.5 acres.

We hope you enjoy this popular recreational area and educational, ecological resource. Located just outside of Wimberley, it is open year-round for exploration.
